NHCLC Senior partner is Indiana Wesleyan University.  NHCLC also has strategic partnerships with Liberty University, Regent University, Denver Seminary, and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.

Indiana Wesleyan University is an evangelical Christian comprehensive university that is committed to liberal arts and professional education. U.S. News & World Report ranks Indiana Wesleyan University as “one of the best Master’s universities in the Midwest.” Over 3,200 students live and learn in state-of-the-art residence halls and academic facilities on IWU’s residential campus in Marion, Indiana. More than 80 majors are offered, covering everything from Art to Theology and Ministry. An increasing number of honors students on the residential campus has led to the formation of the John Wesley Honors College. Another 12,000 adult learners attend classes at regional IWU Education Centers in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, as well as through our Online Degree programs, including Associate, Bachelor's, and Master's Degree offerings such as the Master of Education, certificates, and electives. The innovative adult education program, which was established in 1985, has received national attention. IWU has been Indiana’s fastest-growing University for the past two years. The University’s total enrollment, which now exceeds 15,000 students, makes IWU the largest private university in Indiana. One result of this growth has been the establishment of the IWU School of Nursing, a premier nursing school in its own right. Indiana Wesleyan University stands ready – with the resources and the passion – to equip future generations of learners with skills they will need to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world.

Oral Roberts University is committed to providing students with the very best education. We offer over 100 majors and minors to equip you for a broad range of careers and advanced learning opportunities.

Denver Seminary is committed to the great truths and abiding fundamentals of the Christian faith. Each year trustees, administration and faculty are required to affirm and sign Denver Seminary's doctrinal statement without mental reservation.

Students and Seminary staff are required to affirm and sign the National Association of Evangelicals' Statement of Faith.
National Association of Evangelicals' Statement of Faith

1. We believe the Bible to be the inspired, the only infallible, authoritative Word of God.
2. We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
3. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
4. We believe that for the salvation of lost and sinful people, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.
5. We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
6. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
7. We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.

Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary combines a rich tradition with cutting-edge educational innovation. Rooted in the gospel and God’s Word, the seminary seeks to develop Christian leaders who are thoughtful, globally aware, spiritually mature and ready for a broad array of ministries.

We are deeply privileged to have a history that includes people of vision in the founding and development of what is now Gordon-Conwell such as A. J. Gordon, Russell Conwell, Harold John Ockenga and Billy Graham. They provide a heritage and paradigm from which we are moving into the future. While being historically orthodox and evangelical, we seek to address the issues of our times with both relevance to the culture and faithfulness to Christ and God’s truthful Word.

Gordon-Conwell is unique with its broad array of students from 96 denominations and 38 different countries. We offer multiple sites and delivery systems to meet the varied needs you might have as a prospective student. These include a classical model of residential education at the South Hamilton, MA campus; an urban context offering classes in five languages in downtown Boston, MA (CUME); and adult educational models in both our Charlotte, NC campus and our offerings in Jacksonville, FL. Along with these campuses we have online offerings to address student needs, despite location and vocational commitments. And our Doctor of Ministry programs, delivered at various locations, are geared to provide strength and renewal for your own ministry and calling.

If you come to Gordon-Conwell, what can you expect? You can anticipate being pushed to think in ways you never imagined, for the Church needs thinking Christians who can address our contexts from a Christian worldview perspective. You will be prodded to deepen your walk with Christ, while looking outward to the needs of the world. You will meet professors and fellow-students who may think differently than you do about those parts of our faith that are secondary to the core. And, they will expand your own theological and spiritual horizons. You will find professors who are world renowned while giving themselves personally to your needs and concerns. You will be encouraged to have a passion for a world without Christ, while giving attention to the needs of the whole person and the whole of society. You will sometimes be nudged beyond your comfort zone to become prepared to serve Christ wherever he calls you.

God is doing exciting things at and through Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. We’d love to have you join this dynamic community. Whether you sense a leading to pastoral ministry, cross-cultural ministries, teaching ministries, counseling or a lay person serving Christ in the marketplace, I encourage you to consider Gordon-Conwell, a seminary helping the Church to think and live.

Blessings,
Dennis Hollinger, Ph.D.

15 Practical actions you can take to help students Finish the Race

By Dr. Gus Reyes

Director, Hispanic Education Initiative

Texas Baptists

In Hebrews 12:1-3, Paul encourages believers to run the race set out for them. He reminds believers of the numerous witnesses that precede them. Many of the witnesses are listed in chapter 11. The lives and testimony of the witnesses identified confirm that it is possible to run the race, obstacles exist, and that God is faithful to help believers overcome obstacles that impede their progress in the race HE sets before them.

Paul encourages believers to move aside sin and any obstacles that get in the way of the race set before them. Believers are encouraged to run the race. Paul directs believers to focus on Jesus for encouragement and perseverance on the journey.

Church leaders care about student success in school and college. Many leaders are concerned about the growing number of Hispanic students dropping out of high school. Convinced that Hispanic students can be successful, pastors and church leaders are working to help their students Finish the Academic Race. One of seven directives of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference focuses on academic success for Hispanic students. The family of faith is stepping up to make a difference in student lives.

Here are examples of what your church can do to help students Finish the Race.

1.Sign the Finish the Race Academic Church Covenant.Churches signing the covenant promise to create a finishing high school and going to college environment for students within their congregation and near their community of faith. The covenant is available in English and Spanish at www.NHCLC.org

2.Set aside a special Sunday worship service to dedicate students and their academic efforts to the Lord.Pastor Jesse Rincones led his church in a worship ceremony where parents and other church members took time to pray for the academic success of their students. Kindergarteners through high school seniors and their academic careers were committed to the Lord. College and graduate students of all ages were included in the program. Students heard a special sermon and heard testimonies of how God provides in special ways for those attempting to Finish the Race. Through this service, the church celebrated academic achievement of its students. Visitors including friends of students, teachers, and community leaders observed the priority given to academic achievement by Pastor Jesse and his congregation. For more information on how to develop a service like this one, contact Pastor Jesse Rincones atjesse@alliancechurch.us

3.Declare a “no dropout zone” around your church community. Frequently, we hear about the continued increase in Hispanic dropouts across the USA. Dr. Albert Reyes, President of Buckner International (www.buckner.org) suggests that churches draw a circle around their community and commit themselves to take creative actions to help students graduate from high school. Connect to local elementary, middle, and high schools to discover resources and needs impacting Hispanic students. What a great opportunity for evangelical churches to use this crisis to help students in their community. Use theseactions to reach out to parents as well. Review the NHCLC website to find out how to provide free online GED preparation classes for students wanting to complete their GED.

4.Enlist a volunteer academic resource leader. The academic resource leader focuses on identifying needs and matching them with resources. The academic resource leader visits elementary, middle, and high schools to understand the challenges faced by Hispanic students. The academic resource leader discovers and shares information about college scholarships. This person helps church leaders consider actions to help students and parents improve academic efforts. The academic resource leader works with the pastor to invite teachers, principles, and other academic leaders to visit your church. This leader works to discover student career dreams and introduces them to potential mentors for encouragement and support.

5.Encourage 100% attendance at school. One of the most significant indicators of academic success is attendance. School administrators point out that Hispanic students have great potential for learning if they attend classes Monday-Friday each week. Another aspect of attendance involves arriving to the campus before the bell rings. It is difficult for students to do well in their class after arriving late. Parents and church leaders can make a great impact on the lives of students as they recognize those with the highest attendance records during each grading period. This may seem simple, but, it is difficult to be successful in school with numerous absences. There is a tendency for some parents not to emphasize the importance of attendance. They take vacations and special trips during school sessions. Students miss classes and find it very difficult to keep up when they have been away from school. Pastors and parents partner with teachers and administrators when they commit to having their students in school for each day of the grading period. Students start to get an idea that missing school is not an option. This philosophy positions them for learning and academic success.

6.Encourage students to place their report cards in the offering plates at the end of each grading period. Pastor Robert Cepeda teaches that a “report card” is the fruit of student efforts for a six-week period in school. He helps students of his church understand that their grades reflect their investment and God’s blessings. His church is encouraged to pray daily for students and their school progress.

During one service, students were invited to place their report cards on offering tables near the altar. Pastor Cepeda invited leaders to pray for the report cards and the students they represent. Students heard a message encouraging them to give their very best efforts at school as part of their “work” so that the fruit of their labor would receive God’s blessings. Students were encouraged to seek help for difficult classes. Pastor Cepeda invited students and parents to let him know about academic challenges they face. For more information on this project, contact Pastor Robert Cepeda at rdicepeda@gmail.com.

7.Secure Bible study curriculum that encourages your youth to Finish-the-race. Abel Lopez provides a 6 year curriculum that provides a biblical foundation for students to set goals, grow spiritually, and improve their academic efforts. Search for www.ClayStudentLeadership.orgor call 469-853-4126 to get information about this excellent curriculum. It can be used during Sunday School or weekly Bible studies. Students using this curriculum are seeing significant improvements in grades, relationships with teachers, parents and church leaders. The Clay Leadership Curriculum is available in English and Spanish. It also has internet support for leaders to use as they teach their students.

8.Work with local pastors to create a city-wide event . A local youth rally can motivate and encourage students. A recent rally focused on helping students improve their grades. Work with youth leaders and pastors from several congregations to promote, plan, and implement a rally for your students. One example of this kind of rally was led by Pastor Gonzales. During their first annual Hispanic Youth Rally, Pastor Antonio F. Gonzales Sr. and local pastors challenged students to consider careers, grow in Christ, and improve their academic efforts.Along with youth oriented music, pizza, and lots of fellowship, students received several challenges. Pastor Antonio has the details to help others develop a program and is available at 512-852-4261. One of the focus points of the rally involved encouraging students to strive to reach the “A” Honor Roll for academic success during a semester at school. Be sure to affirm all positive progress made by students with regards to their grade cards.

9.Create a statewide event focusing on academic progress. Frank Palos works with pastors and youth leaders around his state to plan, promote, and coordinate a statewide Hispanic Youth and Singles Congreso. His three day event starts on the Thursday evening before Easter and ends at around noon on the Saturday before Easter. Most states do not have classes on the Friday before Easter. This makes it easier for them to drive to a centralized place in the state for a three day event. Students raise money all year long in order to fund their experience. Students are challenged, motivated, and encouraged in the faith as well as in the need to pursue their education. Many students attend the meeting and take their first step as new believers during the event. Students and their leaders participate in youth oriented concerts and hear dynamic speakers. Several conferences and workshops are provided to help students know how to get ready for college, how to fund college, how to improve grades in middle school and high school, etc…Recently, approximately 8,000 Hispanic youth and singles attended this event held at a university campus. Contact Frank at 214 828 5100 to learn more about his event and to get ideas

10.Take students and parents to visit a university. Many students and parents have little experience attending or visiting university campuses. Pastors and youth leaders can help break barriers and create dreams when taking their students and parents to visit local community colleges and universities. Pastor Johnny Musquiz has been taking his students to universities for years. They visited several universities and talked to administrators, recruiters, and professors along the way. Pastor Musquiz invests in the lives of his students and their parents in order for them to become more acquainted with university life and the potential of a future university experience. Pastor Musquiz has seen many students from his congregation, graduate from high school and universities. He continues to believe in the importance of university tours. For more information, contact Pastor Musquiz by emailing him at johhnnie415@hotmail.com .

11.Encourage your pastor to take a college course. This is one of the most powerful actions a pastor can take for his ministry, church, students and their parents. The benefits of taking a college or university class are great. The experience helps the pastor gain ideas on how best to connect to those pursuing their education. It gives him a “hands-on” opportunity to know how best to help students as they go to college. Pastors can get a college degree, a master degree, and a doctorate as well. All of these efforts make a significant impact in the lives of students. The pastor says volumes about the importance of education when he enrolls in one class. One shining example is Pastor Rolando Rodriguez. He is currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Ministry degree. He shares about the challenge of higher education. He prays about the obstacles. However, he also testifies of how God enables him to overcome academic, financial, schedule, and church challenges while pursing his doctorate. Pastor Rodriguez emphasizes continued education in his church because he is continuing his education. Students and parents of his church understand the sacrifices necessary to move forward. The church often prays for Pastor Rodriguez and all the students of the congregation. Pastor Rodriguez is ready to encourage any pastor interested in continuing education. He can be reached at 972-951-3153.

12.Download the “Finish this Race” song. Students connect with music. Worship leader Ledy Cancino wrote a song just for your students. This song is based upon Hebrews 12:1-3. It is free for you and your students. Help them to be encouraged by downloading the song and playing for them during a discussion about the importance of improving their academic efforts. You can access the song at www.LEDYMUSIC.COM . Enter HEI2011 after locating the Finish This Race title. Let God touch your students through this awesome new song.

13.Invite a Youth Speaker to encourage your group.Youth speakers connect with your students and encourage them to follow Christ as well as improve their grades. They can be funny, inspirational, and thought provoking. While there are many available, I have heard two outstanding youth speakers recently. Gabe Salazar and Fabian Ramirez both have websites that give you an example of how God is using them to influence and encourage your students. You can reach Gabe Salazar at www.gabesalazar.com.You can reach Fabian Ramirez at www.fabianramirez.com.Gabe encourages students with his own personal story of challenges and victories. Fabian faced a bully when in school. He talks to students about the “bully” experience with humor and strategies to help them know what to do when they face bullies!

14.Raise money and give scholarships to students. Friends like Bea Mesquias, Irma Alvarado, and Sergio Ramos worked to raise money to give out becas to Hispanic students in their communities and in their state. Hermanas Bea and Irma gave sacrificially from their business to encourage others to give so that students could benefit. Sergio Ramos encouraged his company to help pay for the meal at a banquet so that all the funds received from each seat sold could be directed to a student for a scholarship. While not an easy strategy, giving out becas is an extremely fulfilling experience. Your church can have a special emphasis meal and raise funds to give to its students and those in the community. Sergio has some creative ideas on how to implement a plan. Contact him at sramos@buckner.org.

15.Encourage students to apply for scholarships. We have identified 500+ websites where scholarships can be found. In addition, more than 100 companies providing tuition reimbursement have been identified. Tuition reimbursement is a great idea. Your students work for a business and at the end of the semester, some businesses help to reimburse students for the cost of college courses. This policy is different at each business. However, it is worth reviewing. We have a list of these companies. Send an email to Lou with a request for directions to receive this information. Contact her at Lou.Merryman@texasbaptists.org. Applying for scholarships is hard work and takes patience. However, the rewards can be fantastic. One scholarship application can be received when families participate in a program provided for Frontera Health Solutions. Frontera provides:

·Telephone access to a doctor 24/7 for all persons living at your home.

·You get to talk to a doctor English and Spanish for free by calling a special number.

·You pay $10.50 per month for everyone living in your house,

·You get a pharmacy discount for prescriptions.

·All the students of families participating in this program can apply for an annual scholarship.

·Find out more about how to access a doctor through the telephone and qualify your family for a scholarship application in the future by going to www.fsolutionsg.com/nhcs.html

This is just one of many scholarship opportunities available. There are many strategies to help your students Finish-The Race. A crisis exists and we are blessed to be able to ask God for help and wisdom in this situation. Commit yourself and your church to praying for all students in your congregation. Consider each of the actions listed and move forward with God’s help. I want to encourage you to help lead your church to help students and parents Finish The Race in your community of faith.
