Lost in Translation: GOP Struggles With Hispanics

Dotted with businesses flashing names such as Las Delicias and El Rey del Pollo, Charlotte's Central Avenue should be fertile ground for Republicans seeking inroads into the state's booming Latino community.

Instead, it offers evidence both of the depth of the Republican Party's challenge with Hispanics and the opportunities that may await if the party can recraft its message.

At Las Delicias, a bakery pungent with the smell of empanadas, 36-year-old owner Manuel Betancur blames President Barack Obama for a weak economy and scant progress on promised immigration reforms.

On The Political Football Issue of Immigration, Republican Party Must Not Squander Their First and Goal Opportunity

By:
Robert Gittelson & Rev. Samuel Rodriguez

The Conservatives for Comprehensive Immigration Reform coalition is cautiously awaiting the introduction of this year's Republican Party platform. We are keenly interested to see where, exactly, the Party will ultimately stand on the issue of immigration reform. By that, we mean that we hope that the Party embraces the call for adhering to the Rule of Law, but also calls for adhering to a call for a more compassionate conservatism.
