Out of the Box

Chalkboard with the phrase "Think outside the box" written around a gray square outline, conveying a creative thinking message.

Counterfeiting money was a serious problem in seventeenth century Britain. The amount of counterfeit funds was staggering and threatened the entire economy.

Although the British government was determined to find and stop the criminals, they were so clever that no one could identify them. Whatever the officers tried failed as frustration discouraged the government.

Then one man thought of a solution that no one had seen. After all traditional methods had led nowhere, this one man stepped “out of the box” and ended the crisis.

The mysterious man disguised himself as a common day laborer, then visited numerous bars pretending to be drunk. He was so effective that no one suspected his true identity, although he was one of the most famous men in the world.

As he moved from bar to bar he made friends with many individuals in the criminal underworld. Eventually he discovered the names of 20 of the most prominent counterfeiters and exposed them to the government who then arrested them.

Who was this unusual man who single-handedly broke the counterfeiting conspiracy? He was Sir. Isaac Newton, one of two most influential scientists in history (the other is Einstein), the inventor of calculus and the man who discovered the laws of gravity.

Newton left his familiar world of science and did something unexpected. He thought “out of the box”.

God has given you a gift of creativity. Use it,
